Cisco Aironet 1200 Series Wireless Ethernet

The Cisco Aironet 1200 wireless access point is a thin, rectangular metal box that can be mounted on walls or ceilings, or hidden behind ceiling panels. It includes either an embedded 802.11b radio that can transmit and receive data at 11 Mbps, or a radio module that can be plugged into the unit for connecting to devices supporting the IEEE's new 802.11a standard, which can transmit and receive data at 54 Mbps, supports more channels and suffers less interference than the IEEE 802.11b standard. Laptops and PDAs, however, will need compatible 802.11a wireless-access cards before they can take advantage of the higher speeds and other benefits of the latest Cisco 802.11a access points.

This provides an option to build a wireless LAN (WLAN) which can be migrated from 11-Mbps to 54-Mbps at either 2.4GHZ or 5.2GHz.

A Cisco Aironet 1200 Series 802.11b Bundle includes the access point platform (which ships with a power supply) and a pre-configured IEEE 802.11b radio module. Similarly, a Cisco Aironet 1200 Series 802.11a Bundle includes the access point platform (which ships with a power supply) and a pre-configured IEEE 802.11a radio module. The 802.11a and 802.11b Bundle SKUs for the Cisco Aironet 1200 Series platform are as noted below:

Cisco Aironet 1200 Series access points deliver the security, manageability, upgradability and reliability to create high-performance, enterprise-class wireless LANs.

With simultaneous support for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz radios, the Cisco Aironet 1200 Series preserves existing IEEE 802.11b investments and provides a migration path to future IEEE 802.11a and IEEE 802.11g technologies. Its modular design supports single- and dual-band configuration, plus the field upgradability to change these configurations as requirements change and technologies evolve. Investment protection is further provided by large storage capacity and support for Cisco management tools, delivering the capacity and means to upgrade firmware and deliver new features as they become available.

The cast-aluminum-cased device provides the ruggedness required in factories and warehouse installations, while still meeting the aesthetic requirements of a corporate lobby. The Cisco Aironet 1200 Series supports both inline power over Ethernet and local power, features an integrated mounting system for wall and ceiling mounting, leverages Cisco's broad line of antennas, and delivers an extended operating temperature range. All this and more makes the Cisco Aironet 1200 Series the most flexible access points available, ideal for deployment in a wide range of industries, facilities, and orientations.

The access point can contain two wireless LAN transceivers (radios). Each transceiver serves as the center point of a stand-alone wireless network or as the connection point between wireless and wired networks. In large installations, wireless users within radio range of an access point can roam throughout a facility while maintaining uninterrupted access to the network.

The 5-GHz radio podule enhancement for the access point will be available in the near future.  It will be easy to install.

5-GHz Radio Podule

The 5-GHz radio podule is a plug-in module that connects to the access point card bus connector. The podule contains a wireless LAN transceiver that operates in the 5-GHz frequency range to provide the access point with single or dual band capability. The podule incorporates an Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (UNII) radio transceiver operating in two of the UNII 5-GHz frequency bands. The podule will be available in two configurations:

  • UNII 1 and UNII 2—contains dual integrated omnidirectional and hemispherical diversity antennas
  • UNII 2—contains two reverse TNC connectors for remote antenna installations
